PLANTING & IRRIGATION
We have constructed a water deposit together with a complete irrigation system
to all the terraces.
Getting permission to build the water deposit, which should be straight-forward, took five trips to the local planning office before permission was finally granted on 21 September
2005 just in time for the actual construction work to begin.
A temporary water tank was delivered to the land at the beginning of September
2005 so that we could get on with making cement for the building works. The size of the container, at 80,000 litres, took everyone by surprise and we toyed with the idea of swimming in it on some of the hotter days!
By the end of October 2005 we were onto our third container of water - so much had been needed for the foundations of the main water deposit base at the top of the right-hand terraces.
Construction of the main water deposit, which will holds 150,000 litres of water,
was hard work because it needed to be on the top terraces, where access for machines and materials is poor. What we had hoped would take one week
took about 80 man days over the course of about 3 months!
The full irrigation system was put in place throughout January and
February 2006 in parallel with planting some of the 300-plus trees that
will eventually grow on the main terraces.
