OUTLINE LAYOUT
The thirty-six terraces are a wide variety of lengths and widths. The average width of each terrace is about 3m and most of them are about 50m long. The actual dimensions are listed below.
Left-hand terraces:
L0 to L4 - all five terraces will be planted with a mixture of fruit trees, however, this area could prove too difficult to run irrigation water to - in which case more hardy trees such as almond or olive may need to be planted here.
Entrance terraces:
E0 - the main entrance to the land is via E0.
E1 - will make an ideal circular medicinal herb garden.
E2 - this terrace needs to be cleared before we can assess how wide it can be made and what can be planted there. It may only be possible to use as a access path to L0-L4 with vines planted along the edge.
Central terraces:
-C5 - this is the lowest point on the land and nestles under a rock and alongside a reed bed. This will become a secret garden (so don't tell anyone about it).
-C4 - this area is likely to be used for a garden and pool.
-C3 and -C2 - these will become gardens near the house where we can plant herbs and
shrubs to attract insects that will be good for the farm.
-C1 and C0 - this is where the Casa Rural will be built. Download the full plans in pdf format here:
Casa Rural Full Plans (5Mb file)
C1 - will be an access road to the terraces in the centre, on the right hand side and to the house.
C2 - will be a garden above the house with a pergola for shade at one end. The pergola is being built early in the plan to provide some shade/shelter so everyone can take a break from the sun (or rain) when working on the land.
C3 to C6 - these terraces will be planted with sun loving fruit trees.
C7 - is mainly an access track to the higher terraces, but it may be possible to plant some small trees or vines here too.
C8 - will probably be used for fruit trees common to Northern European climates, as these higher terraces will be much colder in the winter months.
C9 - this terrace runs into R9 on the right and will probably be used for almond trees.
Right-hand terraces:
R0 - is the utility terrace. It will hold the chicken run, storage sheds, dog kennel, other outbuildings and the compost.
R1 and R2 - will be the soft fruit and vegetable terraces. Parts of these terraces will need to be fenced off to protect the crops from animals and the sun.
R3 through to R5 - will probably be used for fruit trees that require more shelter. We may try more adventurous planting of trees such as pomegranate, avocado and banana.
R6 through to R10 - will be planted with smaller fruit trees.
R11 and R12 - have been combined at one end to make room for the water deposit (8m diameter by 3m high) that will hold 150,000 litres of irrigation water. The rest of the area on these terraces will be planted with yet more fruit trees.
[Note the diagram above only shows 12 of the 13 right-hand terraces by mistake]
A list of over 30 varieties of fruit and nut trees is currently being sourced from various local nurseries.
